A wee while ago, I gave you a bit of a rundown on what my favourite pink lipsticks were. Well, since winter has well and truly arrived, I thought it was probably a good time to share some of my top red recommendations that’ll get you through these coolers months looking fierce and fabulous.

Let’s just hope Gwyneth hasn’t consciously uncoupled from her red lipsticks!

Let me forewarn you that it’s a bit of an eclectic mix with a number of different shades of red. Bear with me though, as hopefully there will be a shade included that works for you!

red lipsticks

From left to right: Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Colour in Wild Rose; Kate Moss for Rimmel in #111 (Kiss of Life); a tiny version of Clinique Difference Lipstick in Raspberry Glace; Rimmel Moisture Renew in Cherrylicious; and Clinique Chubby Stick Intense in Mightiest Maraschino.

Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Colour in Wild Rose

Look, I’m informed that Wild Rose is technically more of a Raspberry Pink then it is part of the red family, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this colour is a great entry level shade for those who are uncertain about whether or not they can rock a red. This was one of the first ‘high end’ lipsticks I bought, on the recommendation of the lovely lady at the counter, when I was still rather apprehensive about wearing bolder shades on my lips. I instantly loved it as the colour could match to pretty much anything I was wearing.

It’s a lovely creamy lip colour with wonderful pigmentation that isn’t an overpowering shade of pink, red, or whatever you choose to classify it as. If you’re nervous about trying new things, I’d recommend giving this shade a go and seeing if reds are right for you.

Kate Moss for Rimmel in #111 (Kiss of Life)

After reading rave reviews about this red online, I wandered down to my local Warehouse and got 111 (Kiss of Life) on sale.  Other than the scent, which I can only describe as plastic berries (or one of those smelly scented dolls you owned as a kid; not even the proper Strawberry Shortcake ones, but the rip-off version), this have proved to be a fantastic addition to my lipstick collection.

The formula is delectably creamy, it applies easily and the pigmentation is fantastic (it is super, SUPER red in a ’50s glamour sort of way). It’s not a drying matte finish, unlike other matte lippies I’ve tried in the past (such as that of my former go-to red matte, Ruby Woo), and the colour will not budge for hours.

Best of all, it’s practically food/booze/pash proof which, let’s be honest, is really what Caitlin and I are searching for in a lip product!

Rimmel Moisture Renew in Cherrylicious

I know, I know! I’m meant to be giving you a range of products, not just extolling the virtues of Rimmel, but I only just got this lipstick a few days ago and I can already tell it will be on high rotation over these winter months!

I was originally looking for a shade of red to replace my trusty tiny travel version of Clinique’s Difference Lipstick in Raspberry Glace. This was attached to a Clinique keyring (along with some great glosses and another awesome tiny lippie,  Glazed Berry). I have very almost used this lipstick right up and have been lamenting the prospect of having to fork out for a full-sized replacement. To my delight, I spotted this lipstick for a grand total of $3.79 on 1-day sale, so I purchased this along with some other brands and shades, which I’ll profile in another post.

When I first opened this lipstick and peered at it closely, I was a little worried that it was going to be overly shimmery, but fear not! It is more of a ‘wet look’ glossy consistency than your average lipstick, but it still manages to maintain its pigment, even if you only apply a single coat.

That’s not the best part of this lipstick, though! This formula is so intensely moisturizing that I’ve never felt anything like it. This can be attributed to the fact that Cherrylicious contains Collagen, Vitamins A, C and E, and a host of other ingredients designed to nourish your pout.

But wait, there’s more: Not only is this lipstick moisturizing, it is also SPF 18 so that it protects your lips against the elements! A product that looks and feels amazing AS WELL AS actively doing useful things for your skin? What is this sorcery?!

The only issue I have with ol’ Cherrylicious is that it glides on a little too easily. ‘m usually a little adverse to lipsticks that apply more like a lip gloss but the fact that this colour is so pretty and so moisturizing means that I’m willing to overlook this.

Clinique Chubby Stick Intense in Mightiest Maraschino

I’ve mentioned in a previous post about my love of Chubby Sticks. I won’t rehash all my reasons, but I’m a particular fan because they’re not quite lipsticks but they’re not nearly as sticky and glossy as ordinary lip glosses. Also, they come in a variety of colours and are super nourishing for your lips!

This particular Chubby Stick is a bright, cherry red, which looks super vibrant on. It is surprisingly opaque for a lip balm, so much so that I often get asked what lipstick I’m wearing when I’m out and about. I feel as though that this particular shade exemplifies My Flatmate’s Wardrobe’s mantra of minimum effort, maximum outcome!

Swatches! Again, from top to bottom: Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Colour in Wild Rose; Kate Moss for Rimmel in #111 (Kiss of Life); Clinique Difference Lipstick in Raspberry Glace; Rimmel Moisture Renew in Cherrylicious (which, contrary to this photo, is very similar to Raspberry Glace!); and Clinique Chubby Stick Intense in Mightiest Maraschino.

An honourable mention, of course, is Caitlin and my usual go-to red, Revlon’s Cha-Cha Cherry. We’ve talked about it several times now (so much so, I wonder if the cynics among you perhaps think we’re sponsored by Revlon) but if you want a little more info, you can look at Caity’s write-up here.

What are your favourite reds? Are you able to eloquently defend Ruby Woo from my criticisms? I’d love to hear someone say something in her defense! Until I can be convinced to give Ruby another try, I’ll be using these products throughout the winter months!
